How to Upholster a Bench Cushion Without Sewing
This tutorial shows how to construct an upholstered bench seat using foam, batting, faux leather, and a staple gun. The presenter demonstrates cutting foam to size, layering the materials, folding neat corners without sewing, and securing everything with staples.

- 1
Place the wooden board on top of the foam slab as a guide, and cut the foam along the board edge using a long serrated cake knife held vertically.
- 2
Lay the faux leather face-down on the floor, center the batting over it, place the foam pad on top, and set the wooden board directly over the foam.
- 3
Pull the batting and faux leather tightly upwards along the center of one long edge and secure it to the wooden board with two staples.
- 4
Continue pulling the material taut and placing staples along the length of the first edge toward the corners.
- 5
At the corners, make a small relief cut in the fleece batting to eliminate bulk and wrap the corner edge smoothly over the wood.
- 6
Tuck the inner flap of faux leather inward to form a crisp right-angle fold on the front face.
- 7
Pull the folded corner flap firmly onto the underside of the board and secure it with staples.
- 8
Repeat the corner tucking and stapling procedure on the remaining corners.
- 9
Turn the cushion over to inspect the front, then turn it back and adjust the loose edges before final fastening.
- 10
Trim away bunched or overlapping excess faux leather along the back with a utility knife.
- 11
Finish fastening the long edge to the board with evenly spaced staples.
Tips
Material Layering Principles
The cushion assembly is layered from bottom to top on the work surface: artificial leather or upholstery fabric face down on the ground, followed by polyester fleece batting cut slightly larger than the core, then the upholstery foam block, and topped with the wooden base board. The batting cushions the sharp wooden edges and prevents the outer fabric from wearing through prematurely.
Corner Folding Technique
Rather than sewing fitted boxed corners, excess fleece is trimmed or tucked away at the corners, and the faux leather is folded in a gift-wrap flap technique to create clean, 90-degree outer edges before stapling into place on the bottom side of the board.
